I am extremely happy with the artwork that was designed for my two CD covers:
The Only Human cover was photographed by journalist, Eva Hambach. I saw Eva’s work on the cover of one of David Dyson’s CDs and contacted her. It turned out that she was the wife of jazz saxophonist, Marshall Keys. I became comfortable almost immediately with Eva during our first meeting and
The Only Human cover went on to be featured in Disc Makers catalogue that year!!
After the fun experience and success of the Only Human cover, I was clueless about what to do for the cover of my next recording project, Love. Then, the thought of a CD art competition came to mind. So I hosted one! It was called the International CD Art Competition.
The first step was to assemble a group of world-class art professionals to serve on the judging panel. I was thrilled when artist Margarida Kendall-Hull, gallery owner Myrtis Bedolla (MD), gallery owner George Hemphill (DC), artist Jean-Claude Bertrand (France), gallery owner Florence Lynch (NY), and Washington, D.C. gallery owner Norman Parish (d. 2012) accepted the invitation. Norman also graciously agreed to exhibit the work of the 10 finalists and host an opening reception.
About a month later, the finalists were announced and the reception was underway, where I performed a couple of selections with a guitarist and announced the winner: Tricia Boyce from Loma Linda, CA!!! Here are some shots of it, but I’m afraid they don’t do the 3-dimensional piece any justice. It is beautiful.
Years passed, as I continued to record the music for Love and tended to other projects. That’s when graphic designer and educator extraordinaire, Romanieo Golphin, presented an alternate design that incorporated some of Trish’s elements. It was as incredible as Trish’s piece and had a subtle elegance. I decided to go with it, and I simply adore the cover. I’ll be sure to announce details surrounding the CD release here, so that you can be one of the first to see it.
As for the art inside of Love’s CD package? Now THAT’S a story!! Stay tuned.
